Archdukes

Archdukes

Archdukes are a four piece indie rock/pop band formed beneath the beautiful mountains in the world – in Brisbane.

They’re Trent Bazley, Daniel Melville, Jacob Trotter and Elliot Heinrich, and have played together since late 2009.

After playing several gigs and have several gigs lined up in October and November (including playing with Ball Park Music and Hungry Kids of Hungary), things can only go forward when they release their debut EP later this autumn.

Their musical style is like a upbeat, atmospheric indie stylish rock lullaby, that has the potential to become something really epic. This music get you hooked straight away.

It’s a King Thing

It’s a King Thing are a band for boys and girls, hails from Haddons, the Hills and the Heights of suburban New Jersey, and creates music you love. They are: Brian Mietz, Steve Poponi, John Masino, Mike Maier and Jay Tagmire.

In 2009, the band recorded their second album ‘Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo’  – hah, try to say that ten times. ‘It’s a King Thing’ was released in 2007.

In June of 2009, the It’s a King Thing opened a sold out show for The Lemonheads at Johnny Brenda’s and in October Philebrity defined It’s a King Thing as one of the front runners in the upcoming boom of Philly music.

Good songs: Wine and Ponies, Old Hobbies, Kira.

Gobble Gobble

Gobble Gobble are an insanely crazy and highly enjoyable band based out of Canada!

Neon Graveyard is the debut album, and the result of an oddly visceral, flamboyantly eccentric treatise on death. Sunny funeral siestas, ecstatic Nintendo eulogies, and effervescent burial anthems all feature prominently, cohering remarkably with more pensive moments where fuzz threatens to spill over into shoegazing, and melancholy solo piano is overwhelmed and enveloped in digital static. ..Puuh!

Inspirations are taken from the genres like freak folk, chiptune, garage, modern classical and weirdo electronic – Neon Graveyard is an album you can’t sleep to, unless you really feel like it.

Stella Stagecoach | The Day Life

Stella Stagecoach

Stella Stagecoach are a brand new band, formed in 2009, by brothers Matthew and Tim Morgan.

They’re a typical small factory town in the rural south. Originally, the music consisted of purely instrumental pieces to be used for the various filmmaking projects the two undertake. Eventually, lyrics began to creep into the music, and some songs were written.

They released their first album “The Great Divide” last year.

Tags: pop, indie pop, pop rock, alternative.

Good songs: What have I Done (video), Stars, Paper Crown.

The Day Life

The Day Life are a band with a unique style. And it was for me, love at first shubi-duh (Other Plans). They’re pretty new (formed last year) and have already released three EPs.

The Day Life consists of Alex Markovitz, twin brothers Will and Dallas Hosey, and Shane Halpern. A band who have played shows non-stop in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and New Jersey, from the very beginning.

Good songs: Other Plans, A British One, 1963, Real Life (video).

Arrows of Love

Arrows of Love

Arrows of Love! You should almost think this was a kind of “sugar sweet, fly around on a cloud surrounded by unicorns because I’m so in love” band. It’s not. This is the rather opposite.

They take the inspiration for their name from William Blake’s poem ‘Jerusalem: The Emanation of the Giant Albion’. So.. almost?

Arrows of Love creates noisy, lo fi garage rock packed in with some lyrics nearly insane to like. But thank God in a good way. The lyrics fit the unsystematic and (actually) pure brilliant music perfectly.

Arrows of Love formed in London in 2008, by Nima (formerly of Hush The Many) on guitar and vocals, Wim Eden (Loverman, The Eraserheads) on drums and Kate on cello.

They’ve released “Burn this town” EP (2009) and the single “In the Year 2525” (2009.)

In the Year 2525

The Kickdrums

The Kickdrums

The Kickdrums are two guys based in Brooklyn, New York. Producer/singer/songwriter Alex Fitts (Fitts) and dj/producer Matt Penttila (Tilla) meet while working as engineers at a studio in Cleveland, Ohio. They shared many common interests and both had reputations as skilled producers.

Combining their efforts, the two united as “The Kickdrums” and spent the next five years perfecting their craft behind the scenes, producing records for major and independent artists across the boards.

In 2007, the Kickdrums had grown tired of the redundant songs in rotation on television and the radio. And they began to develop their own kind of music.

Fitts would spend his days penning songs and unraveling chord progressions, while Penttila would break down records and flip obscure samples on his drum machine. All the rules were thrown out the window. The end product would be mesh of alternative rock, soul music, and hip hop laid over heavy drum breaks and fuzzy guitars.

The Kickdrums released their debut album “Just a Game” in 2009, followed by “There Might Be Blood” EP the same year. They’re heading the studio in the summer of 2010 to work on the second album.

Lady Danville

Lady Danville

Lady Danville’s music is fun. And have a brilliant mixture of piano driven pop, folk pop, a cappella pop, piano pop and quirky and fine lyrics. And they can make even the simplest tune sound ridiculously catchy.

Lady Danville is an acoustic folk pop trio from Los Angeles, California. With Michael Garner on keys, Matthew Frankel on the cajon, and Dan Chang on the guitar.

They were formed in 2007 after meeting as members of UCLA’s Awaken s Cappella. In 2007-2009 they’ve toured around in the LA area, and played on venues like Troubadour, Viper Room, Hotel Café, and the El Rey.

In 2009 they ventured out of the LA area and, and in March 2010 Lady Danville embarked on their first West Coast Tour and will be ending their run in Austin, TX making their debut appearance at the annual SXSW 2010 Music Festival.

They will also return to the studio by the summer of 2010 to record the debut album. Two EPs “2007 Star Lounge Compilation” and ”Lady Danville EP” was released in 2007.

Interview: The Zone

The Zone is an alternative rock band from Guildford/Fleet/Basingstoke, UK, Founded by Dave (vocals, guitar), John – JC (bass, vocals) and Jon – JP (drums.) They were formed in 2006, and released recently a new EP “The Time We Have” from Reputation Label.

The first thing I noticed about this music was the guitar skills. They’re solid. And you can hear everything from gentle Italian inspired riffs combined with an acoustic guitar (Pleased To Be Here).
To the total opposite, and what has proved to be the typical sound of The Zone; a steady rhythm with some energetic guitar riffs in “Which Path”, “The Time We Have” and “Years Gone By” – a track that also have a brilliant guitar solo.

I asked Dave some questions;

How and when did The Zone form?
A long, long, time ago I was born in Coventry. When I was a student I got into a few bands in London and carried this on until I got married and the kids arrived. I did a few gigs and recording but with a young family it was difficult. My eldest is 18 now and they all have their own things to do, so that gives me more opportunity to get out and rehearse and gig. The Zone formed back in 2006 when JC popped up in Guildford. We got together for a party to do some covers, then wrote some original stuff and then advertised for a drummer and did our first gig as The Zone in May 2007 at the Dublin Castle in London. I’ve known JC for years (since college), it just was that I was down South and he likes living in the Midlands…

What is your musical background?
As a kid I learned music theory playing the trumpet and then switched to the guitar. My guitar teacher used to love Santana and I think some of that is in my playing somewhere. I was in bands in the late eighties in London and although I did backing vocals I only started singing lead vocal in the nineties. We played all over London in the eighties, supporting bands like “The House Martins”. It was great fun and we clocked up quite a few gigs. At that time the bands were wanting to do pop-rock and techno but I kept introducing a blues riff or two where I could – I recall there was a review that described my guitar as providing “Gilmour laden riffs” – I took that as a compliment!

How would you describe your music?
I think we like to take the feel of Classic rock/blues and give it a twist or two. The twist is generally in the progressive vein, adding in bits and runs and twiddly bits. When I’m jamming with JC and JP (Jon Parry, our new drummer) it all comes quite naturally. I also prefer to avoid “obvious clichés” – there’s so much music where you think “where’s the originality in that?” – I love trying different rhythms and styles and keep things interesting.

What’s your biggest musical influence?
Classic Rock – Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, Cream. And then there were the more progressive rock bands – Pink Floyd, Yes and Rush. My older brother used to play loads of Beatles and Pink Floyd and Caravan, things like that. The first band I remember actively seeking out was Thin Lizzy – saw them in concert a few times, brilliant live. Like most guitarists I could reel out a few names – Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Tony Iommi, Dave Gilmour, Alex Lifeson – I’ve tried to take on things from those guys for sure. Vocal wise I’d say I’ve tried to listen to more recent styles – I like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Kaiser Chiefs and Kings of Leon – “singers” rather than “screamers”. I also have listened to a fair amount of Aha – I’m not just saying that because you’re from Norway!

You recently released a new EP “The Time We Have” – what can you tell us about it?
It’s our first release with Reputation and we’re really pleased with it. It’s a bit of a “change-over” as our old drummer Keith plays on two of the tracks and JP plays on the other two. We’re opening live with the title track and getting a great reaction and “Just A Song” (with JP’s drumming) seems to be going down well as well. “Pleased to be here” is something different for us, acoustic guitars and JP played a 12-string acoustic as well as drums on that. “Which Path” is more rock/blues and is another live favourite.

Could you briefly describe your music-making process?
I often get something in my head and try to get a rough recording of it so I can introduce it in a jam session with JC and JP. Sometimes it’s just a lyric or riff but at times it’s a large part of a song. The main thing is get to a guitar before it disappears, listen to Radio 4 – anything but music! – as that is the easiest way to erase the song in your head. Then when we’re jamming some ideas form quickly and others take a lot longer – “Acceptable Risk” took ages, at one stage we had three separate parts and couldn’t work out how they should fit together. But now I think it’s one of the strongest we’ve done – it’s on our Myspace and Reverb Nation pages and on my profile page at Reputation if anyone wants to hear it.

How do you promote your music?
Like most bands we’re open to offers!!! Reputation http://www.reputationlabel.com is a great place and we’re getting songs played on there fairly often. We also get involved with a site called “Rock Til You Drop” http://www.rock-til-you-drop.com where we can. Other than that you will find us regularly messaging fans and prospective fans on Myspace, Facebook, Twitter etc. We’ve had some great comments from fans at our live shows and from Myspace people listening to our songs – it’s really great to get the feedback.

What are your plans for 2010?
We’ve played a couple of gigs in April and our next gig is at the Boileroom in Guildford on Thursday 20th May. We’re supporting Karn8 and it should be a good night! After that we’re planning a few gigs in June/July and in July we’re playing Guilfest on Saturday 17th July – details of our gigs are on Reputation, Myspace and Reverb Nation. We’re also planning to record more songs – we’re currently working on a rocker of a song called “Revelation (Reputation)” which we’re hoping the Reputation people will enjoy! We’d also love to squeeze in a video if we can – plenty of ideas, just need to find the time!

You can follow The Zone on Reputation, MySpace, Twitter, and on Reverbnation.

Jane Carrey Band

Jane Carrey Band

Jane Carrey Band are Jane Carrey (vocals/guitars), Terry Goldberg (drums), Ian Sloane (bass) and Daniel Sahagun (guitar), a band formed in Los Angeles in 2008.

Jane Carrey grew up in a family of carnies, with a father, (Jim Carrey), as a professional comedian, inspired her to write happy songs of otherwise sad topics, and to see the beauty even in the deepest melancholy.

The band has been playing around in the LA area since the formation, and a self-titled debut album was released in October ’09.

The typical sound of Jane Carrey band is an upbeat mixture of modern pop, folk rock, soul, alternative pop and indie rock. That gives you a fresh and innovative summer sound.

Simple Beauty

Cosmo Jarvis

Cosmo Jarvis

Cosmo Jarvis is a little bit of everything; he’s a songwriter and a singer, but he’s also a filmmaker, storyteller, poet, iconoclast, Jessica Alba enthusiast and campaigner for the equal treatment of gay pirates. He’s an ordinary teenager (edit: guy) with extraordinary talents.

He was born in 1990 in Ridgewood, New Jersey, making the move to Devon, England as a child. And he first began to make films at home on VHS when he was barely twelve, which was the first chapter of his relationship to technology. He’s a genius.

He also write songs. ..about everything; people he meet, people he know (about). Some fictional and some from real life experiences.

The music he makes is, like him, a bit of everything. It’s ska, funk, rock pop funk. And incredible catchy. And it’s interesting;  it has a summer sound with a brilliant mixture of trip hop, hip-hop, brit-pop, indie-rock and you never quite know what’s coming next. It’s like a musical bag or Revels (although I haven’t found the raisin yet!)

Cosmo Jarvis is also a new addition to the line up to The Streets and Just Jack. He is a troubadour with experimental and funk influences.

April Smith and the Great Picture Show

April Smith and the Great Picture Show

April Smith was born and grew up in Toms River, New Jersey with a mum that adored Queen and a father that feed her with Elvis Presley, Tom Waits and Kinky Friedman through his old 8-track tape player.

April herself crashed her older siblings’ practice sessions, talent shows and parties with her outstanding living room shows and stole every show she could ever take part of.

She is now living in Brooklyn, New York and have her own band, consisting of Stevens (bass), Marty (lead guitar), Mike (keys) and Nick (drums).

April and her band have played on various venues all over town, where she’s known for her confidence and playful performances.
They have also been branded by Rolling Stone of “30 Bands to Watch” at Lollapalooza.

The debut album “Songs for a Sinking Ship” was released in January 2010.

April Smith is extremely talented, and is like a modern edition of one of the highly respected ladies that sang jazz alongside a piano in the olden days.

The lyrics are quirky, witty and and ..wise. That goes very well to its indescribable and rockabilly ambiance.

EP announcement: Songs for Staying In

Quiet Company – Songs for Staying In

“Songs for Staying In” is Quiet Company’s new EP, set to be released on May 11th.

Quiet Company will release a new song from the EP each Monday until the release date. And you can follow the progress on making the new EP on their official site. Where they through a video blog discuss and talk about the new song.

You can also download all the songs by pre-order “Songs for Staying In” from the same site.

“Songs for Staying In” is another great release from Quiet Company. The eternal optimistic and upbeat style, makes this music really easy to like, whether you’re a fan or not.

“Things you Already Know” is a very good instrumental song. The sound of something that can remind you of some good lo-fi inspired stuff (and some Beatles), before it burst in to a typical rock song, while keeping the good laid-back Quiet Company style. And use flutes and trumpet, makes this to one (of many) brilliant tracks on this EP.

Quiet Company will have a show at Encore w/ The Rocketboys, for the new release on May 7th.

The Ladies of Sport

The Ladies of Sport

The Ladies of Sport are Rich deCicco (drums, bass, guitars, programming, percussion, vocals), Mary Kohatsu (guitars, bass, Keyboards, programming) and Ann Kohatsu (guitars, keyboards, programming, percussion).
And they are a alternative pop band based in Brooklyn, New York.

They have so far released one album, “Empires Fall”. That can be downloaded from their official site, by joining the mailing list.

The music is influenced by the sound from the eighties, which contains an electronic drum and a regularly use of programming, without being a total Dolby.
The music is still modern, something you can hear in Slipslide. This is a alternative rock piece with a nice background mix of a matching piano and a hint of a subharmonic violin.

Foster the People

Foster the People

Foster the People is a brand new LA based band, that was formed in October 2009. They are Mark Foster (keys, guitar, lead vocals), Zach “Reazon” Heiligman (MPC), Mark Pontius (drums) and Cubbie Fink (bass back-up vocals).

They are still a unknown band, untouched by media, and despite that already on a good way to have one of the biggest hits for this summer of 2010 (for the single “Pumped up Kicks”).

They’ve since the formation last year built a loyal fan base for their shows on Music and Mashup Party, The Rooftop Riot Party presented by SUPERGOODMUSIC and The Viper Room, and been loved by (or for) their track “Pumped up Kicks”.

..which is a typical inventive pop, folk, experimental piece of work, that can remind you of the stuff from the likes of Peter, Bjorn and John and the Empire of the Sun.
This is also one of many good tracks from this band.

Jukebox The Ghost

Jukebox The Ghost

Jukebox the Ghost is a piano driven pop band, born in Washington, now loving in Philadelphia. They have toured extensively since 2006.

They toured with Ben Folds  in 2009, across the USA, followed by a UK/Europe tour from February 2010.

Their first “Let Live and Let Ghosts” was released in USA in 2008, and internationally in 2010, in the occasion of the Europe tour. A second album are set to be released in 2010.

The whole “Let Live and Let Ghosts” album is a brilliant album that almost sounds like a concept album as the songs glide in to each other, and starts where the last one ends.

The most notable transition is between ” Miss Templeton’s 7000th Dream” to “Static to the Heart”, something that proved to be most energetic track on the whole album.

Hold it In

Montpelier

Montpelier

Montpelier is a four piece indie pop band from Brisbane, Australia.
They are Dave Butler, Greg Chiapello, Andrew Stone, and John Pickering.

They have previously performed across Australia under a different name, and took a hiatus, before they were reborn as a new band, Montpelier, in early 2009.

They spent some time in Los Angeles, recording their debut EP “Montpelier EP” to be released on March 5, 2010. The EP was produced by Kevin Augunas (Cold War Kids, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Yves Klein Blue).

The typical sound of Montpelier is a combination of modern pop rock (influenced by the likes of Crowded House, Passion Pit, The Temper Trap and the Boat People).

That, combined with some upbeat piano-driven pop tunes, makes this music sound refreshing and upbeat. This music is easy to like, it’s comfortable to listen to, and it gives you a floating style, from some clearly well established musicians.

The Rafters

Boy & Bear

Boy & Bear

Boy & Bear was formed in early 2009 by Jake Tarasenko (bass), Dave Hosking (lead vocals/guitar), Killian Gavin (vocals/guitars) and Tim Hart (drums/vocals.)

They’re based in Sydney, and are built up by the collaboration of three front men of separate bands. The combination of three songwriters has resulted in songs that reflect a variety of genres and personalities.

It’s a relative new band, and two singles has been released so far. “The Storm” and “Mexican Mavis” give you a great interpretation of 70’s folk and catchy folk rock. This music is rural, catchy, and proves that this is a band with a lot of potential.

They are currently working on the debut EP, due to be released later this year.

Mexican Mavis

List: Alternative Love Songs

Love is weird, and some know exactly how to write a song about it. This is the first part of a new “list series” of songs with a certain topic. This time; alternative love songs. Love is all you need?

Jukebox the Ghost – Hold It In
You are young, and you are in love with the cutest girl you know. But you can’t tell her, or anyone else about it.  Because “life is, oh my God, if I tell him, he’ll tell her, and then she will know I like her!” It’s a typical scenario.

The Home GuardI’m The World Best Kept Secret
There is someone out there for everyone. Whether they’ve been born, or if they are already dead. This is a nice little story about someone who is thinking about killing themselves, but try to kill everyone in the whole world instead, in hope to find the one.

The GadsdensI killed Love
This song is about a break up. And the big dilemma; are we right for each other, are you good enough for me? Am I a superstar?
..and can we work it out?

La Shark1958
Who haven’t felt in love with an actor, a superstar? Or an actress who have been dead for 50 years?
It’s the ideal person, isn’t it?

Filthy Boy – Biggest Fan Ever
Love and marriage. Man and woman. Role swap. Enough said.

SkyboxVarious Kitchen Utensils
If you don’t love anyone, you can always love yourself. Your body, and everything about it.
“Grrrrr .. we’ll shine forever oooh baabay!”

Skybox

Skybox

This music is fun. Wonderfully quirky, and the kind of music you’ll remember for being more than original.

Skybox is a happy pop band from Chicago. Tim Ellis and Christian Fields is the core of the band, along with a rotation of other musicians to fill out the total lineup.

They released the debut album “Arco Iris” in 2006 and the second album “Morning after Cuts” was released in early 2010.

The sound of Skybox is a happy mix of The Feeling, Scissor Sisters and Muse (if they ever should go pop.)
The rhythm is like a happy and intensive hot summer day. And a musical interaction of jazzy pop with some nice contributions of cabaret (Cue Conversation), power pop, that make this music almost impossible to listen without raising a little smile.

In a Dream

Fiction

Fiction

Fiction are Mike Barrett, Nick Barrett, Daniel Djan and James Howard. Four boys from London who create music just like they did in the 80′s.

The good new wave wave is back and Fiction are one of the bands to conquer this wonderful music genre. The typical sound of Fiction is the greatest elements from the likes of Flock of the Seagulls, The Cure, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and Thomas Dolby.

They mix elements of modern new wave and 80′s inspired new wave, noisy synth pop and electronic pop.

To Stick To

The Half Sisters

The Half Sisters

The Half Sisters are Isadora, Freya-Rose and Fifi, two sisters and a best friend from Brighton. They make music that makes even the obstinate rock smile. This statement makes sense when you release how natural and delight this music is.

They make music out of love, peace and “ukulele, flute and drums combined with three point harmonies create a lush and mesmerising chorus of catchy pop hooks and adorable honesty.”
And the result is happy and upbeat pop music that absolutely make you happy.

Bitter Ruin

Bitter Ruin

Bitter Ruin are Ben Richards (guitar and vocals) and Georgia Train (vocals) a dramatic theatrical duo from Brighton. They have played together for about two years and have so far released “We’re not Dancing” (EP).

This music is like a musical theatrical performance between two people with a big love for cabaret folk. The interaction between the leading parts is just something that makes this music so remarkable and something you just don’t forget.

The vocals are powerful, yet so vulnerable and give a good basic for the debut album that will be released on May 26.

Beware

Dinosaur Pile-up

Dinosaur Pile-up

In a bedroom, not so very far away (he can be closer than you think) is a one man band of Matt. Dinosaur Pile-Up is the name of the band. And he can often be found writing songs and playing  them on his 8-track recorder.

The walls can be blue or maybe even green, and when he’s on tour he’s in good company with two other human beings, they are Tom and Steve.

Dinosaur Pile-Up are one of those bands (read: the band) that most likely can be known for having such a low lo-fi sound it’s almost fascinating.

Their self-released single ‘My Rock N’Roll’ was a ‘single of the week’ on the Zane Lowe show on Radio 1. And they have so far released Traynor, My rock ‘n’ roll and The Most Powerful EP in the Universe!!! (yes, that’s the name of the EP.) And it’s totally smashing!

The sound of Dinosaur Pile-up is a mix of rock, punk, alternative rock and some grunge (actually a lot of grunge) and an unpredictable touch of garage punk.
Despite the lo-fi style, this music is quite good. And the things that keeps this music alive, and makes it as good as it is, is the steady guitar riffs and powerful drums.

The Lounge Crusade

The Lounge Crusade

The Lounge Crusade were formed in 2009 from the ashes of Lincoln bands The Idlers and Kadence.

They are Nathan Berger (lead vox and acoustic guitar), Joel Berger (piano and backing vox), Chris Pearson (lead guitar), Steven Esberger (bass), Jason Parker (percussion).

Since The Lounge Crusade is a pretty new band, they haven’t released any EP or albums yet. A four track demo set is available on their MySpace profile.

Demos or not – this music is pure quality. It’s harmonic, yet upbeat and acoustic.

In Time is a great acoustic pop ballad. The intense and at the same time steady and upbeat piano makes this music sound alive a keeps you listening with a combination of acoustic guitar riffs.

Beck and Call
is a great little pop song. It’s got a good piano rhythm and bassy guitar combined with a funky and foot tapping chorus.

The Justice Force 5

The Justice Force 5

Nanananana, who needs Batman when you’ve got The Justice Force 5?
The Justice Force 5 wants to save the world – through the music! They even named their EP after the mission. Starting in Brighton, where they’re from.
They also have a reputation of being a brilliant band live.

The lineup of superheroes is: General Bovine (backing vocals), Captain Courageous (vocals and rhythm guitar), Bo Diggity (backing vocals and lead guitar), Dr.Amazing (backing vocals and keybords), El Vampiro Diablo (bass and backing vocals) Judgement Dave (drums) and The Organ Grinder. They are also knows as General Bovine & The Justice Force 5.

This music is brilliant. The lyrics are mostly about saving the world and get the girl. Something we need lyrics about in these days.

They have one great love rock ballad, Noises Like Oooooh. Which contain all the greatest elements from this band, the guitar riffs, the hero-alike lyrics and steady and original rhythm.

Fight The Fight
has a really good musical composition; the (again) great guitar riffs, some new wave inspired background noises and you can hear some brilliant drums here.

Fight The Fight

Kevin McWha Steele

Kevin McWha Steele

Kevin McWha Steele is a talented New York based singer/songwriter. He has previously been studying art and music for four years in France, and he finds his inspiration through singing, writing poetry/lyrics and traveling.

His dance EP project “The Arrowtooth Waltz” was officially released the second week of December 2009, and have already received good feedback.

“The Arrowtooth Waltz” consists of four brilliant and total different tracks, with elements from the likes of Billy Ocean, David Bowie, Anthony Keidis, Perry Como and Matt Monro.

You can hear energetic and fresh music, with a mix of experimental rock, waltz, disco soul, alternative beat, some funky reggae and a modern jazz bit.

The Killer Disco features a guest appearance with singer Stephanie McKay. And it’s like a funky gothic-a-like Billy Ocean sort of thing. It is the most funk-up track with some polished disco jam influences.

Love In June is a jazz retro modern chill out piece of work. It can remind you of a soundtrack of an old French love story. And it was chosen as American Idol Underground’s #1 song in the jazz category.

A 14 track LP is set to be released in April 2010.

Beatbullyz

Beatbullyz

Beatbullyz are a four piece band from Swindon, and is most likely one of the most optimistic hip hop bands I’ve ever heard. They are Disco (drums), Philonious Funk aka Chilly (decks), Bozo (lyricist) and Bully (vocals).

They released the debut album Rootz in 2008, and the latest official single “Golden City” was released in November 2009.

This music is atmospheric, urban and a brilliant crossing of urban hip hop, electronica funk, dance and skasoul. And can most likely be the UK answer of Black Eyed Peas.

Keys to Life reminds me of Just Jack’s Embers. And is one of the reasons why they’ve been compared with the likes of Just Jack and Black Eyed Peas. The lyrics are brilliant and have a indescribable combination of the above mentioned genres.

Reuben Butchart

Reuben Butchart

Reuben Butchart is a singer-songwriter from San Fransisco, now living in New York. His voice is pure and atmospheric, and he has previously been compared with Chet Baker and Stevie Wonder.

He have released two albums “Golden Boy”, “Dusk” and one EP “Come & Play”.

He is currently mixing his third album.

This music is absolutely adorable. The fascinating and genius lyrics, with a gentle and well produced mixture of soulful and lovely vocals. And some pop and jazz-based instruments make this music easy to like and easy to fell in love with if you’re looking for dreamy and good old-fashioned soul pop.

Come and Play is both a good musical experience and a very well written song. You can hear everything from an easy and at the same time intense piano line and a little love story.

All There is to Tell makes the good old-fashioned part of this music. And the musical interaction with Antony Hegarty makes this to a genuine masterpiece.

Northern California

The Mekkits

tm

The Mekkits

The Mekkits are five childhood friends (Mark Bristol, James Chambers, Adam Costello, Richard Sims, David Smith and Steve – a mysterious 6th member of the band) from Manchester.

They’re known for having a surfy and sea breezed sound, heavily inspired by ska, folky surf and some psychedelic (Bears in the Wood). The music is perfectly combined with some great vocals, and it makes the music easy to like.

Inland Sea EP is the latest release (released on 30th November) from The Mekkits, and it’ a concept release inspired by  Anglesey (North West Wales), a place close to their hearts.

They are currently working on the debut album, ready for a 2010 release.

Inland Sea EP

This concept gives you everything good of ska, surfy pop and some alternative dub. It’s upbeat and energetic.

And if you listen to the all the songs from beginning to end, you’ll experience a good mix of good music mixture, great and innovative vocals and find out how alive one simple EP can be.

If it doesn’t rhyme on epic..

..it should sound epic!

Three brilliant bands I’ve had the pleasure of listen to lately is exactly what you can call epic. They are 5 Cent Theatre, The Black Dove Experiment and Audioalysis.

5 Cent Theatre

This music got me immediately to think of Elbow. A newer and violin version of Elbow. And it’s lovely, emotional and sensitive music on its very best.

5 Cent Theatre is a new band, formed in London in 2009.  Some of the members of the band are previously known as Story One. Ball Park Music

Ball Park Music

This music reminds me of all good things in modern music. It has it all, without making it sound like a cliche.
The lyrics are quirky and very well written. The great mix of pop, modern pop jazz and piano pop makes this music fun and eternal inventive.

Ball Park Music was created by songwriter and vocalist Samuel Cromack in 2006. The rest of the band joined him when they all started at the same course on the university.
The total line-up is Samuel Cromack, Jennifer Boyce, Dan Hanson, Paul Furness, Dean Hanson and Brock Smith.

The debut EP Rolling On the Floor, Laughing Ourselves to Sleep was launched in April 2009, and the single Sea Strangers (I Don’t Really Know You) was released in November 2009.

Rolling On the Floor, Laughing Ourselves to Sleep is a great debut release that show all the great sides about Ball Park Music. This music is a result of someone who really love making music and it’s something you can hear through the music.
Culture Vultures In the Year 2008, All I want is you and Mr Maybe are three very good tracks. They’re all the great sound of Ball Park Music as they’re a bit pop, a bit rock and a great dose of remarkable vocals.

Sea Strangers (I Don’t Really Know You) is a typical “good jazzy piano driven pop song” you easily can be found of. The lyrics here have gone in the right direction from the debut EP, and it is perfectly combined with a remarkable and upbeat tune through the song.
