The Trees – Things That Make You Happy

The Trees – Things that Make You Happy

I’ve always liked the sound of The Trees. It’s like a walk in the forest, preferable early in the morning (something that gives this music a whole new meaning.)

“Things that make you Happy” have a psychedelic theme through the entire album. And you can hear elements from the rocky side of the Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Doors and some Dire Straits and The Velvet Underground.

“Dirty Money” is pure rock! And it can’t give you anything but a good first impression of what you can expect from these guys.

“Stop Talking” was the first track I ever heard from The Trees, and it was, and still is my favorite. If you listen to this with headphones, you’ll see what I mean. This is psychedelic rock, alternative rock and has a musical composition that almost floats through your ears and makes you beg for more.

“All my Friends” is a killer tune, first psychedelic highlight, with the most brilliant lyrics; “elegantly wasting away..” –You just gotta love it!

“Goodbye to the Love” is another of my favorites; not only is it the beautifully sad, but it also introduce you to another side of The Trees’ musical repertoire, while keeping it “Trees”.

“OddOneOut” is another good track; it hasn’t the most upbeat lyrics, but they’re brilliant and describe what every average person feels from time to time.

“Sometimes” has an ace opening, followed by a good interaction between a guitar, drums and a irresistible psychedelic theme. The lyrics can easily be a part two of “OddOneOut” – and I love it.

The only thing I can say about “Softly Spoken” is; if you focus on the music through the song you’ll hear one of the greatest compositions from The Trees. Mmm – lovely!

“With Stars Dancing” is a bit different from the other songs of the Trees. It almost sounds like a summer day with a combination of ambient rock, a bit melancholic rock. That’s makes the song sound epic.

“Lazy Night” is another brilliant track; it’s soft rock, a bit heavy rock, and great interpretation of a rocky Pink Floyd.

“Devilpact Suitcase” is great example of Pink Floyd meet Elbow in a rocky backyard. What a lovely little outcome.

Remarkable covers

From time to time I stumble upon a cover done by an unsigned artist. Some of them are good, and some of them are ..bad. Here’s an ever-growing list of some great and remarkable covers, covered by unsigned artists and bands.

Bobby Flynn – The Lovecats
(The Cure – 1983)

Cool bass line, the typical “Cure sound” – and the add of something personal.

The Home GuardFor no One
(The Beatles – 1966)

The Beatles with a great touch of The Home Guard. A neutral and fabulous cover of an all-time-classic.

The TreesThe sounds of Silence
(Simon & Garfunkel – 1965)

This is the one and only psychedelic-a-like cover of this (again) all-time-classic.

Ten Foot Nun -  The Living Daylight
(A-ha – 1987)

Pop-funk-Ten Foot Nun!
A messy and at the same time genius cover of a James Bond soundtrack.

Ferraby LionheartMan on the Moon
(R.E.M  – 1992)

Ferraby Lionheart does a “Ferraby acoustic” and emotional cover out of this R.E.M classic.

Full Scream Ahead – Poker Face
(Lady GaGa  – 2008)

The typical sound of Full Scream Ahead is uplifting and energetic power pop/rock. Just like this cover, they can’t do wrong.

The GadsdensHalo
(Beyoncé Knowles – 2009)

The vocals are great! And the way they’ve used the piano in this song, makes this a very good cover.

Kitty Hudson – Wild Horses
(Rolling Stones – 1971)

A gentle acoustic and brilliant cover of this classic.

Way TangentKill the Director
(The Wombats – 2007)

A great “live take” cover of the Wombats’ 2nd single.

Sliimy – Pass the Dutchie
(Musical Youth – 1982)

Did someone say reggae? Or funk?

Mark HoleMy Manic and I
(Laura Marling – 2007)

This is the typical sound of Mark Hole. The piano, his great voice and his own interpretation of the song makes this to a great cover.

The Trees

The Trees

The Trees are an alternative psychedelic/rock band based in Basildon.

The members did a lot of gigs both in and outside London in a few years, until illness and management issues forced the band to slow down. And so they did. But they didn’t stop recording and write songs. Until they started up again in 2008, the current lineup is Simon Dawes, Tony Eke and Ben Frost.

This music can easily be described as wonderful psychedelic rock. The lyrics aren’t the most joyful. But, who cares? It’s like a wonderful, intelligent poem! And it’s certainly making you think. I also have to mention the genius line of “elegantly wasting away” in the song “All my friends”.
