Interview: La Shark

La Shark are an unusual band, with a musical style no one really can describe, except from maybe themselves. They spent March touring UK with Paloma Faith and are releasing a new single “A Weapon” on April 5th.

How and when did La Shark form?

Me and Lou Lou met in a hair salon on bond street and what can i say it was love at first sight, the rest of the guys don’t have hair so they were hard to get a hold of , remember the cadburys’ advert with the gorilla thats our drummer .. just loads of CGI , Sami El Enani used to play piano in to the old women in the nursing home my gran was staying at. i think me and Benjamin met in a Jacuzzi , all that seems so far away now.

How would you describe your music?

Our music is highly influenced by the bee bop Era, with a bit of early 20th century pornography thrown in to add that ‘spark’, the style … very ‘Vogue’ the more glossy the magazine the better …. ‘plastic pop’ , ‘high-end hip hop’…the lyrics are all LIES ! …is this all making sense to you?

Who writes your songs?

Pharell Williams, and his sisters Venus and Serena. but seriously it depends on the weather, we compose in accordance to the four seasons.

Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues?

Southamptons ‘Guildhall’ was a rather fabulous affair. and we love the Bunker in Deptford, the only place in London that releases showers of human sweat from the ceiling as you dance, a sea of Human tongues.

Any plans for any future releases?

‘A weapon is released in two days (5th of April), and it’s a rugged display of the Human will to live, love and Die, the most annoying/rewarding 3 minutes of your life !

Do you do everything yourselves or do you have a manager or booking agent?

our manager is a cat-walk model and the 6th member of the ‘collective’ , he doesn’t take any shit and punches people (us) which is a very important part of our music…’violence’.

booking agents are the biggest ARSEHOLES you’ll ever meet. oh “HI ED, sorry man , i didn’t mean it….. Love you! “

What are your plans for 2010?

List: Alternative Love Songs

Love is weird, and some know exactly how to write a song about it. This is the first part of a new “list series” of songs with a certain topic. This time; alternative love songs. Love is all you need?

Jukebox the Ghost – Hold It In
You are young, and you are in love with the cutest girl you know. But you can’t tell her, or anyone else about it.  Because “life is, oh my God, if I tell him, he’ll tell her, and then she will know I like her!” It’s a typical scenario.

The Home GuardI’m The World Best Kept Secret
There is someone out there for everyone. Whether they’ve been born, or if they are already dead. This is a nice little story about someone who is thinking about killing themselves, but try to kill everyone in the whole world instead, in hope to find the one.

The GadsdensI killed Love
This song is about a break up. And the big dilemma; are we right for each other, are you good enough for me? Am I a superstar?
..and can we work it out?

La Shark1958
Who haven’t felt in love with an actor, a superstar? Or an actress who have been dead for 50 years?
It’s the ideal person, isn’t it?

Filthy Boy – Biggest Fan Ever
Love and marriage. Man and woman. Role swap. Enough said.

SkyboxVarious Kitchen Utensils
If you don’t love anyone, you can always love yourself. Your body, and everything about it.
“Grrrrr .. we’ll shine forever oooh baabay!”

La Shark

La Shark is a band from London, and they are so far from a average band you can ever get. They are Samuel Geronimo Deschamps, N.H.A Buxton, Love Maynard, Benjamin Francis Markham and Sami El-Enany, and they have played together for about two years.

La Shark are known for their original and spectacle live shows in underground London. And they’ve been described as a “stunning new force in popular music, a band to actually get excited about, something that doesn’t come along too often these days.”

They’ve been tipped as one of the hot new bands in 2010 by Drowned in Sound boss Sean Adams, and are going on a tour with Paloma Faith in March.

The typical sound of La Shark is a mix of new wave almost alternative pfnk, meet the glory sound of a good old 50’s rhythm. The music is guilty pleasure. It’s wonderfully weird and incredible fascinating.
