ALBUM RECOMMENDATIONS
Marina and the Diamonds – ‘Electra Heart’ (30.04.2012)
”‘Electra Heart’ is not so much a creative leap forward, more an Olympian pole-vault over the bar of talented-newcomer into the global amphitheater of a cultivated Classic. Two years on from her top 5 debut The Family Jewels, the self-styled avant-garde D.I.Y artist has detonated her own experimental past and landed feet first in the future with Electra Heart, a stunningly ambitious, seamless, cohesive and confident sonic pulsar spinning between electro-pop euphoria and come-down melancholia.”
Primadonna
Allo Darlin’ – ‘Europe’ (01.05.2012)
The darlings of the UK’s indiepop scene, Allo Darlin’, follow up their critically acclaimed and hugely adored self-titled debut with their new album Europe. The London-based four-piece – led by Australian songbird Elizabeth Morris, with guitarist Paul Rains, Bill Botting on the bass and Michael Collins on drums – have created another masterpiece full of perfect, sophisticated pop gems.
Wonderland
Kate Miller-Heidke – ‘Nightflight’ (13.04.2012)
”Smart-pop singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Hiedke proves with her third album that she can not only handle a catchy melodic hook, but delve into more unusual sonic territory as well. Nightflight has a far more richly layered sound than her previous albums, drawing influence from artists such as Bat For Lashes and Kate Bush. It’s still built on catchy pop hooks and melodies and will undoubtedly find itself at home on a few commercial radio stations, but the songs on this album also reveal a darker side to her songwriting”.
Sarah
Santigold – ‘Master of My Make-Believe’ (01.05.2012)
’Master of My Make-Believe’ is the second studio album from American singer/rapper Santigold. Co-produced by Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio), as well as featuring other guest producers (Q-Tip, Switch, Bureka Som Sistema), this record has been described by Santi herself as being “sonically eclectic” as lead single “GO!,” featuring Karen O, ably demonstrates.
The Riot’s Gone
Children Collide – ‘Monument’ (20.04.2012)
Album number three for Melbourne’s Children Collide is ‘Monument’.
The record takes their signature bass crunch, post-punk sound and gives it a massive sonic kick into new, yet familiar, territory.

St. Lucia is what happens when the long and bleak winters of New York recede and summer emerges; giving birth to memories of childhood holidays, faded photos of exotic places and the dream of recapturing this. Inspired by his homeland of South Africa, his journey through the UK and relocation to Brooklyn, St Lucia could reference the sonics of Temper Trap, or the infectiousness of Empire of the Sun, but ultimately it is a wall of atmospherics crafted with an inordinate amount of time-consuming precision.
“I am the thread that accents, not the fabric that overwhelms.” Once in a while, true artistry comes along and the world takes notice. Chancellor Warhol is such an artist. Born Antonio Dewayne Boleyjack in Nashville, TN, Chancellor Warhol grew up engulfed in the diverse Nashville sound that shapes his very own music today. Combined with the natural love for fashion and design, he is an artist making his creative mark on the world.
Channeling an electro-rap style that is uniquely his own, Warhol released his first solo album, Japanese Lunchbox in 2010 (Voted Best Rap Album of 2010 by the Nashville Scene). His unconventional sound has earned him a place on stage at this year’s Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Atlanta’s A3C and headlining Next Big Nashville’s Soundland music festival. Warhol has also supported a long list of artists, including Questlove, Kid Cudi, G-Side, and Yelawolf. Clement Marfo & The Frontline are a seven-piece diverse collective from South London led by the charismatic Clement. Born to Ghanaian parents and raised in Kingston, South London, Clement has become something of a phenomenon in the underground British grime scene. Clement’s hard-hitting flow is complimented by the multi-talents of vocalist Kojo, Dion on drums, Jonny on bass, Rich and Dan on guitar and the sole female of the collective, Stacey, on keyboards and vocals.
Clement Marfo & The Frontline’s inimitable sound comes from their deft ability to fuse hip-hop, grime, rock and pop in a brilliantly idiosyncratic fashion. Known for their energetic and irrepressible live shows, the last year has seen them gain early radio support from Zane Lowe, Huw Stephens and Semtex; as well as playing live with a wide range of artists including Plan B, Example and Florence and The Machine. Last summer saw them play big shows at The Coronet for ‘Let’s Go Crazy, Hoxton Bar & Grill for ‘ILUVLIVE’ and Shoreditch House for ‘Wired’. They also took part in Sara Cox’s Insanity New Music Tour, playing at universities across the UK.

People Like Us – ‘Welcome Abroad’ Taking a glance at just a few tracks from ‘Welcome Abroad’, songs from The Beatles, Ennio Morricone, Danny Kaye, Bob Dylan, Rod McKuen, Elton John, Gene Pitney, Elvis Presley, Dionne Warwick, John Denver, Julie London, and Queen are all amalgamated. While recent mashup culture often centers on the instant gratification of seamlessly juxtaposing hooks, People Like Us tracks transform the source material into collages that are equal parts dissonance and pleasure, making artful commentaries on our culture and Bennett’s own existential amusement within such a wondrous world. Popcult is an Alternative Pop/Rock band from Denver, Colorado.
The band started in late 2010 backing Denver based electro outfit ‘The Chain Gang of 1974,’ recording demos in the back of a tour van. Months later, Renaud and his bandmate Tyler Venter decided to focus on their own project. After a very successful digital release of their debut EP last July, (with over 1000 downloads in the first two months) they’ve managed to stir up some attention in their hometown. Now a four-piece, the band has already started pre-production on their second release. the best part:
“It will be free. I’ve always wanted to give away music for free. And now that we all have day jobs, we can afford to do that.”
“It’s okay to play,” insists Nicholas Petricca, lead singer, songwriter, and keyboardist of Ohio quartet Walk the Moon. It’s a hard point to argue after a listen to the lead single off their album ‘I Want! I Want!’, dance-rock extravaganza “Anna Sun.” I Want! I Want! has you dancing quickly. Very quickly. So it is no surprise that the response to the band has been just as immediate. Surrounding a reactive SXSW appearance, the band has already been featured as Nylon Magazine’s Band Crush, as a Hot New Band by SPIN Magazine, as a New York Post band “You Must Know,” and in the Spotlight of Last Call with Carson Daly. Walk the Moon is poised for an explosive rise.
Of Monsters And Men are an indie folk band which formed in 2010 in Reykjavík, Iceland. The band consists of Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir (vocals, guitar), Ragnar Þórhallsson (vocals, guitar), Brynjar Leifsson (guitar), Kristján Páll Kristjánsson (bass), Árni Guðjónsson (keyboards, accordion) and Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson (drums).
The band released their debut album ‘My Head is An Animal’ in September 2011. The album’s single ‘Little Talks’ peaked at #1 in Iceland, and became successful in the United States after extensive airplay on Philadelphia rock station WRFF and subsequent word of mouth.
Mark Hole is the perfect example of how charisma, a lot of energy and the fact of being a born entertainer can be such a good combination.
After spending the last months of 2011 supporting Tori Amos on her Europe tour (including playing in front of 3500 people in Royal Albert Hall), Mark Hole recently released ‘Torture Garden’ – the first single from his upcoming second album ‘Always Follow Your Heart’.
So who is Mark Hole? Well you’ll get to know him. Start by listening to his songs, going to his gigs, you’ll find him to be a pretty open kind of fellow, if a little eccentric. It’s relevant by the way – his eccentricity, his uniqueness, because it informs a musical style with a real independence of character. Think Rufus Wainwright and Ben Folds, then think beyond both and a bit to the side. You won’t have heard much like it, and you’ll want to hear more…
Tell us about yourself and your music; how did you first get involved with writing and performing?
I am dyslexic and I hated school. The only class I was ever good at was maths! Music is like maths – patterns, numbers, sense.
I also loved anything where I could be in the limelight. I joined the choir and any school play I could; dancing, clowning – you name it, I’ve done it. I went to a stage coach on the weekends and would organise amateur dramatics whenever I had the chance. It was only once I was 16 that I was able to go to a school that spoke my language; Hurtwood House. It was amazing, full of life, creative people, a theatre, drama productions, cameras – I was in heaven. At this point I met my good friend Rob Castell who got up in front of the School and sang a beautiful heartfelt song about falling out with his friend. It blew me away and it was at this point that I started writing everyday. I became obsessed. Computer games were dead to me. All that mattered now was writing and acting. After Hurtwood, I joined a band called The Seed and went to drama school. After drama school I quit acting and shortly left the band to record my first album ‘F-Sharp’ which you can buy on my website.
How would you describe your music and who/what are your inspirations?
I describe my music as piano based, atmospheric and emotional. I like to tell stories, I want to make you laugh, cry and have a party if there’s time. If I had to compare I would say Rufus Wainwright, Randy Newman, Ben Folds Five, Jeff Buckley and Queen.
Which artist would you like to collaborate with and why?
I would love to collaborate with Little Dragon as I think they are magnificent. I think my voice would work well over their style and I would love to get involved.
What was the inspiration behind your first album ‘F Sharp’?
Most of my early works are written in F-Sharp, which I’m told is a difficult chord and or key to write in. I don’t know what all these musos are banging on about but I thought that was pretty cool. Plus, most of the songs on that album are about how painful love can be, how F***ing Sharp it can be! And so the girl, the songs and then the name….. F-Sharp.
Dirty Base
What’s the story behind your new single ‘Torture Garden’?
The story of ‘Torture Garden’ is this: it was her birthday, so we went to London’s leading Fetish Club ‘Torture Garden’, and that is where it ended.
Torture Garden
What’s the best advice you’ve been given and who was it from?
The best advice I’ve been given is to “Always follow your heart”. If you follow your heart you can do no wrong. I don’t remember who gave me this advice, but it will stay with me for the rest of my life.
What are your career highlights so far?
I’d say the best thing so far was walking on at the Royal Albert Hall in front of 3500 people.
What can the audience expect at your gigs? When’s the next?
Audiences can expect either to cry, laugh or dance. And maybe if you’re lucky all three! (Details of my next gig are all on the facebook page www.facebook.com/markhole under the events section)
What are your plans for the rest of 2012?
My plans for 2012… Finish and put out my second album “Always Follow Your Heart”
