The Victorian English Gentlemens Club Announce UK / European Tour
The Victorian English Gentlemens Club, who released their third album ‘Bag Of Meat’ via This Is Fake DIY Records in June 2011, have just announced details of a Europe wide tour, kicking off next week in Norwich.
The album, the follow-up to 2009′s ‘Love On An Oil Rig’, was recorded over Autumn/Winter 2010/11 in Cardiff, with producer Charlie Francis.
The band describe the record as having ‘two halves’: the first, “a reaction to the last album, heavier and darker with lots of layers of brutal noise”, and the second “a return to our earlier stuff – quirkier and emptier, more vocal lead”. The songs are nearly all sub-three minutes.

Khalid Rafique, aka Shells, has released a brand new single in the form of ‘Arctic’ on his Bandcamp. The single consists of two tracks, ‘Arctic’ and ‘Spiders’.
With a series of singles and EP’s already released, as well as an acclaimed remix of Southern Shores ‘Tangier Winds’, ‘Arctic’ sees Rafique consolidate his hypnotic brand of euphoric electronic into its most dance floor orientated yet.
Building from haze of reversed synthesizers and glacial guitar sounds, ‘Arctic’ brings in angelic, errant signals, understated basslines and seductive vocal samples to become a driving melodic force. Its counterpart, ‘Spiders’, then follows where his ‘Pastels’ EP led off. A maze of syncopated Tenori-on noise litter the driving kicks, as Rafique morphs his soundscapes ala Dan Snaith around the intricate weave of synth noise.
Shells will be performing live this Saturday at East London’s Lati Ri as part of the Downstairs Music night.
Zeus : New Single and Second album Announcement!
On the heels of a pair of stellar 7-inches intended to bridge the gap from 2010’s Polaris Music Prize nominated debut, Say Us, Zeus is back with “Are You Gonna’ Waste My Time?” the lead single from the band’s forthcoming sophomore album, due for release in early 2012.
“Are You Gonna’ Waste My Time?” delivers smart, heavyweight riffs that conjure some of the 1970′s best-loved artists.
London ‘bedroom pop’ duo Matt Poile and Alex Morris, better known as Crushed Beaks, are set to release their debut single proper through the Too Pure Singles Club on November 21st in the form of ‘Close-Ups/Sun Dogs’. The latter is available to stream now before the single’s official release.
Having formed in 2010 through a shared love of Italian horror films, Crushed Beaks set about putting their fuzzy wall of melodic noise to record. Their mixture of relentless, pounding drums and salacious, swirling melodies found the two creating a live force to be reckoned with and a slew of demos that caught the ear of many a tastemaker on their very upload.
Their first single proper sees the duo take the step into different surroundings to their DIY recording norm. Whilst the guitars were kept in their natural Wendy House environment, the drums were taken to New Cross’ Zion Chapel where they were given the somehow ghostly strength the songs so demanded. ‘Sun Dogs’, the first track to emerge from the sessions, finds the two at arguably their most romantically inclined to date. With a step up in terms of production from their bedroom beginnings, ‘Sun Dogs’ strides in on a haze of shredded guitars and driving drum beats, as Poile’s vocals play the wistful apparition amongst the melee. As a squeal of feedback beckons in the song’s cathartic, triumphant ending, there’s no doubting that Crushed Beaks confidence has grown magnificently, and is set to carry on further beyond their humble beginnings.

Cairns-bred, but now Brisbane-based indie folk darling Emma Louise is having one hell of a year so far and it looks as if things are only going to continue to get more exciting as the release of her second EP is expected before too long. Before that, however, she’s heading on the road on her First Flight tour, proudly presented by Street Press Australia.
